For over 30 years we have been trimming dogs of all breeds from our home at Ashgate in the beautiful county of Somerset. We now also offer dog boarding in a new purpose built facility close to the house.
Our team of Jacky, Emily, Jordan & Kath are all passionate about dog grooming and undertake regular training to ensure grooming skills are kept current. Sue, who started the business and has been trimming for most of her working life is now easing up and concentrating on our show dogs, but is available to advise and guide our trainees as she has a vast knowledge of breed standards and her experience is too valuable for us to loose.
Jacky – Owner/Manager – Level 3 Diploma in Professional Dog Grooming – 11 years ago my family moved to Somerset to work more closely with Sue Thomson who started the business many years ago. Having been taught by Sue, my specialist area is hand stripping and this includes training other groomers and owners. I also clip and style dogs using the KC breed standards as a guide or to a style preferred by the owner. Last year, with the expansion of the business, I decided to study for formal qualifications and undertook a City & Guilds Diploma course I am very proud to have passed with Distinction. I am now a member of The Groomers Spotlight – a facebook page & website which has been set up to assist customers to find qualified and professional dog groomers in their area. Please feel free to go and have a look and also to pass the link onto your friends. Jacky holds a current certificate in Canine First Aid.
The Groomers Spotlight Website
Emily – C&G Level 3 Dog Groomer – Emily joined us straight from college when she was looking for work experience and has been here for just over 2 years Having finished her qualifications, Emily now works alongside Jacky. She is brilliant with the dogs and as she is so calm she puts, even nervous, dogs at their ease. Emily will be undertaking further formal training in the future. Emily specialises in Clipping and hold a current certificate in Canine First Aid.
Jordan – Batchelor of Science Degree with Honours – Animal Welfare and Behaviour Management – Jordan grew up with dogs and specialises in hand stripping. She has returned to the business recently from maternity leave and is expanding her grooming range under guidance of Jacky. Jordan also assists in the Boarding Kennel. She uses her wealth of knowledge to help settle dogs coming into the kennel for the first time.
Kath – – As part of the Ashgate team, Kath helps with all training sessions teaching 1-1 hand stripping. Kath concentrates on the breeding & showing of our own West Highland Terriers with Sue and is often found at Championship shows around the country. Please go to our facebook page Ashgate & Hillcloud Westies or our website www.ashgate-westies.co.uk to see more about our own lovely dogs.
Whilst we have been known for our specialist areas for many years we also trim a wide range of dogs, which include pedigree and cross-breeds. Because of space, wedo not like to have lots of dogs in the Trimming Shed at one time, and we therefore, only book one or two dogs in at a time. We therefore advise you book early to avoid a wait for an appointment.
Before we accept a dog for trimming, we ask a number of questions and ask you to sign a consent card which covers us, and your dog, by our insurance. We are insured for the work we carry out.
Mark – Kennel Manager – Mark is in overall charge of the boarding kennel and together with Jacky, ensures that all dogs in our care are safe and well cared for. He has great knowledge of dogs and is with the dogs staying with us most of the day. He spends his time ensuring they are played with and mentally stimulated as well as getting lots of fuss and individual attention. Mark is responsible for the kennel buildings and ensures we meet the very high standards of cleanliness and disease control that is expected of a modern kennel.
The premises are never left unattended and all our kennels are alarmed and protected by the latest technology. We take the safety of your dog very seriously. We will be installing camera’s in each kennel shortly so we can check our visitors overnight.
Our promise to you is that your dog will be well cared for and treated like one of our own whilst he/she is with us and we hope that you will feel comfortable leaving your dog with us..
We will soon start building a new larger grooming room which will allow us to continue our expansion. The new room is being designed with the comfort of our grooming dogs in mind and the welfare of the staff who work here. We will have a waiting area which you will be welcome to use, and have a coffee, while your dog is being trimmed. Keep an eye on this site and our Facebook page for developments and new services.
We also breed and show West Highland White Terriers. To find out more about our show dogs please visit www.ashgate-westies.co.uk. .
